1. Title:
"Dungarees"

Largo Caballero was P.M. of the Spanish Republic from Sept.'36 to May '37.
This image shows him in dungarees with a worker. The image of a P.M. in dungarees would be a rare sight to-day. After being imprisoned in Mauthausen Concentration Camp during W.W.11 he died shortly after his release.

gerry2 Title:
"The Fog of War"

Ernest Hemingway, the distinguished writer and war correspondent(perhaps a proto-type of those to follow)was a friend and supporter of the democratically elected Spanish Republic. He had witnessed the casualities during W.W.1 and now in Spain found himself witnessing the suffering. The defenders of the Spanish Republic were under enormous pressures from the Fascists, supported by Hitler and Mussolini. The policy of appeasement was of little help to those at this time under this "fog of war" resulting in splits, realignments in an impossible task.

Internationale Title:
"Ghosts on the March"

To quote W.H. Auden's poem "Spain" (1937) "They floeated over the oceans; They walked the passes. All presented their lives." I salute those who did exactly that, from these islands and beyond. Carrying that candle of hope from the past to present, to the future. Dedicated to: Those Brigadeers I recently met, Michael O'Riordan, Bog Doyle and Jack Jones. "you are history. You are legend."
(La Pasionaria Doleres Ibarurri)

Internationale Title:
"Giddup"

This title refers to an eye-witness account I read about the Battle of Bruneete, July '37. John Power and Peter O'Conner, both Irsh men, were in rhe ranks of the 15th International Brigade. John Power was wounded during the battle and his friend carried him from the battle on his back with the wounded man, though in agony, shouting "Giddup".No doubt the humour saw them through a tough day.

Internationale Title:
"Last Thoughts"

The poet and playwright Frederico Garcia Lorca was brutally murdered in 1936. I hope through this image he stands for all those who faced a summary execution, lost in their last own last thoughts, in dignity against terror.

Internationale Title:
"Spanish Elegy"

For me the image is symbolic of two different idealogies being given birth in the the 20th century in Spain. The mother Spain holds both children to her breast whilst death hovers above. The Corrida og the bull-ring were many who would meet a brutal death. Brother fighting brother. The anguish of Spain and the sad demise of the Spanish Rebublic and a fledging democracy.
